Dialogue
Duo for Recorder and Harpsichord
— A Concert of Early Music from the 17th and 18th Centuries.
Musician :Machiko Suto
Yi-Chang Liang
In a corner of an opulent salon sits an exquisitely crafted harpsichord as the hostess intently performs. An invited musician, inspired, whips out a recorder and joins in an impromptu duet. The guests, swept along by the melody, alternate between joyfulness and pensiveness, find themselves immersed in the musical dialogue between the two.
17th-century France saw the rise of salon culture. It was a space without boundaries or limitations, where thoughts and words could soar freely. The hostess warmly welcomed artists and intellectuals to her home's reception room, ushering in a brilliant
"Age of Dialogue."
"Dialogue" is a give-and-take, a mutual tug-of-war, a piecing together and revealing which ultimately completes the other.
It's the layering of musical phrases and melodies, the communication between musicians and audience, and the soul's connection with music.
This time, the Claude Debussy Centre Musical et Artistique invites two musicians - Machiko Suto and Liang Yi-Chang who will use the harpsichord and recorder in a series of dialogues to recreate the elegant charm of salon culture, leading music lovers to experience the melodious sounds of the Age of Dialogue.

In 2014, two musicians co-founded the IJ SPACE Early Music Ensemble in the Netherlands, with performances spanning the globe, hoping to introduce more people to the beauty of early music.
When discussing the timbre of their instruments, Teacher Machiko described the wooden flute as akin to a singer, where the player's breath directly produces sound through the woodwind, much like speaking or singing. Teacher Liang Yi-Chang remarked that the harpsichord’s tones gently envelop the flute, not merely providing a basso continuo accompaniment but opening another theme, telling the same story through different melodies. Thus, a dialogue is formed.
This concert features pieces from both the early and late Baroque periods, hailing from England, Spain, and France, inviting music lovers to travel back a thousand years to experience the cultural and artistic atmosphere of that time.
We sincerely invite you to join the Debussy Music Arts Center as we traverse time through the dialogue of the wooden flute and harpsichord, enriching your holiday afternoon with beautiful melodies.
Recap Video
That afternoon at the Claude Debussy Centre musical et artistique, we heard the sounds of the wooden flute and harpsichord resonating, witnessing the musical exchange between musicians and listeners.
The audience's shared insights during intermission and the praises after the performance further extended the beauty of this dialogue.
The visible and invisible conversations subtly resonated within the exquisite musical space of Debussy, accompanying the tones, lingering in the indescribable emotions of every music lover present.
The concert "Dialogue: Flute and Harpsichord Duo" expanded the form of dialogue and led us back to the essence of communication. When the audience, performers, time, space, and music echoed each other, a multifaceted aesthetic dialogue slowly flowed through the Debussy Music Arts Center on the day of the performance, still gently resting in our ears to this day...
